Impact
This interconnected and emboldened environment facilitates what Jack and Linda Gill refer to as “leveraged philanthropy”—a model for giving that grows strategically targeted investments into enormously influential programs. From their initial $5 million gift and matching funds from Indiana University, the Gill Institute faculty have been awarded nearly $40 million in external funding. The Institute includes more than 100 people, including 12 research scientists, 15 postdoctoral researchers, 15 technicians, 14 graduate students, and ~50 undergraduates who actively participate in research. The Institute maintains the awarded NIDA grant (DA056410) Center of Excellence: the Center for Cannabis, Cannabinoids and Addiction (C3A), led by Ken Mackie. Additionally, through its annual Gill Symposium and Awards Ceremony, the institute attracts the field’s top luminaries from around the world, who maintain collaborative and mentoring relationships with the Gill Institute's chairs and students.
